Sengkang: Introduction

Abstract
Sengkang District is located in the East Region; and the district comprises Sengkang New Town and Jalan Kayu Estate.

Sengkang is developed in 1995 as the 18th New Town of Singapore. It is the first new town to be developed after a 10 years hiatus.

Toponymics
During the initial planning stage in the early 1990s, the New Town remains nameless. It then adopt the temporary name 'Kangkar / Jalan Kayu' New Town, before finalizing its name as Sengkang New Town in 1995.

The name Sengkang means "prosperous harbour" in Teochew and Hokkien. It is named after a road called Lorong Sengkang, off Lorong Buangkok.
