Bukit Merah: Introduction

Abstract
Bukit Merah District is located at the immediate outskirt of the City. The district has a long history and is coloured with numerous local legends and myths.

Bukit Merah is an amalgamated town that incorporates several historical estates including Tiong Bahru and Bukit Ho Swee. Its boundaries also encompass numerous landmark and attractions like Mount Faber, Keppel Harbour, Sentosa and the Southern Islands.

Toponymics
Bukit Merah, Malay for red hill, gets its name from the “Tanjong Pagar / Bukit Merah” legend. The Malay boy, who has advised the Sultan to build a fence of bamboo pole to kill the swordfish, has alarm the Sultan with his intelligence, thus the Sultan decided to kill him. The soldiers send by the Sultan, stabbed the boy to death at his home on the hilltop and the boy's blood flow down the hill, dyeing the soil red.

The hill lies at the site of the present Bukit Merah Town Centre. Bukit Merah was levelled for the construction of HDB Centre.
